![]() Masego’s The Pink Polo EP stopped me dead in my tracks the first time I heard it. The eight-song project, which saw the Jamaica-born, Virginia-raised artist collaborate with Dallas producer Medasin, has the infectious energy of the growing wave of rappers emerging from the DMV. What sets Masego (born Micah Davis) apart is his deep dive into hip-hop’s jazz roots. ![]() ![]() He combines its signature saxophone and scatting elements with trap and house sounds. “TrapHouseJazz,” as Masego has come to call this amalgamation, not only defined the EP’s unique sound but also set the 25-year-old apart from the web of SoundCloud rappers trying to establish themselves as industry mainstays. Three years after Pink Polo, TrapHouseJazz will see its fullest realization in Lady Lady, Masego’s debut album, set to release on September 7 (the track list has been shared exclusively with Vogue, below). With Lady Lady, Masego, who also goes by the alias Uncle Sego, finds himself at a peculiar crux. He’s no longer the musician remixing tracks with his saxophone for his “Woman Crush Wednesday” SoundCloud series, but he’s still walking the line between relative newcomer and bona fide success. The latest full-length solo release for Buffalo rapper Conway The Machine features guest appearances from 7xvethegenius, Benny The Butcher, Lil Wayne, Novel, Keisha Plum, Annette Price, Rick Ross, Jill Scott, Beanie Sigel, Jae Skeese, T.I., and Westside Gunn. Sure, Masego counts DJ Jazzy Jeff-one half of hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, alongside Will Smith-as a mentor and has collaborations with rapper GoldLink and electronic producer French Kiwi Juice (FKJ) under his belt.
